How the recordings are done:

What are these 'Small Band', 'Swing Band' and 'Mainly Piano' recordings

Generating the Band music
These 'band' and 'mainly Piano' recordings are computer generated by the 'Band in a Box' (BIAB) program. (see their website at pgmusic.com)

For this program to work, it has to be supplied with the melody line and the harmony chord names, eg:

and then a style (from thousands of styles, eg like country and western) is selected, and the program magically generates all the harmony for each of the parts.

Since I have first starting recording Band music using this program, there have been very significant improvements in the program. I am particularly impressed with their 'Real Tracks', where they now have recordings by real musicians that are incorporated. Since the feature became available, I have incorporated a lot of the 'real tracks' piano parts.

Visit the 'BIAB' website to hear and learn more about real tracks (click here. )

So while BIAB works from information we supply to it, it is an interesting mix of computer generated and human played music.

The styles I have chosen
As mentioned above, there are thousands of styles provided by BIAB and other 3rd party suppliers. I have only used a very small subset of those (maybe about a dozen).

I have chosen the rather 'traditional' style that could be used by a church that would like to have something more modern than an organ or with more variety than a simple piano, but yet, not so 'modern' that people would be offended.

Perhaps with some of the 'swing band' versions I have felt more free.

What to do if you don't like my chosen styles
If you would prefer a different style (eg Country), then you can purchase BIAB for yourself, and use the BIAB file from my site in your version of BIAB and generate the music that suits your taste. I have done the difficult first step of creating the BIAB file with melody and chords for you. There is some help on doing this at my site - click here.

I know of people who have done this, and indeed some of the files on the mymidi.audio site have been created that way from my BIAB files. So it can be done if you have general computer and music abilities.

There is always the option, that if you wish to just adjust the tempo, pitch, number of verses etc, you can do this by following the instructions on this site. (Click here.)

The difference between the styles I've used
In the main I have done three versions, as follows:
  • Small Band which simuluates a typical small church band including drums.
  • Swing Band where the music timing is changed to a 'swing' feel. In many cases, the chords are also 'jazzed up' (eg, major chords become a major seventh).
  • Simple Piano where the drums are toned down, and the piano is predominate. There is usually a simple bass guitar as well.
